Divine Easter

Here’s Hoping Your Easter is Simply Divine

If you’re one of the growing number of people who like their confectionary to come with a clean conscience, then there’s really only one place to look for your eggs this Easter – Divine. As well as being free from all the artificial gubbins that have a tendency to make kids hyperactive and do no great things for our insides, Divine are, of course, the pioneers of fair trade. All of the ingredients that go into producing their delightful products are ethically sourced, while all the packaging is recyclable and as much as possible is made from recycled material. Most important of all however, is that the chocolate tastes mighty fine!

This Easter Divine have added two brand new products to the range; the kids Beano-themed Easter egg from the ever-popular Dubble (£4.00/110g), and the distinctly grown up luxury Divine Dark Chocolate Egg (£10.00/260g), which comes complete with Divine’s bestselling Ginger & Orange Chocolate Bar. Made from 70% cocoa, the egg is rich and smooth and lingers teasingly on the tongue, while the zesty tang of the Ginger and Orange awakens the mouth from its chocolate-induced stupor.

If dark chocolate is not for you, then you still have the praline mini-egg filled luxury Milk Chocolate egg (£10.00/260g) and the small White Chocolate Egg (£3.00/55g) to choose from, not to mention a range of enticing Divine gift sets.

For more information on the Divine Easter range visit www.divinechocolate.com/shop.

Harrods Easter

This review can also be found on www.TheCulinaryGuide.co.uk. Visit the site for in depth food, drink and travel features and news pieces as well as restaurant and hotel reviews and competitions.

Harrods Easter
Spring is here and Easter is fast approaching, so naturally thoughts turn to all things sweet, spicy and chocolaty, but this year why not try something a little bit different? Rather than reaching for the common and supermarket brands cast your eyes over all that Harrods has to offer – your taste buds could be in for something of a surprise.
If afternoon tea on an Easter theme is your thing, forget your Simnel cakes and traditional current hot crosses, if you want a real savour sensation cut yourself a slab off one of Harrods Gruyère and Chive Giant Hot Cross Buns (£4.95 each). The aroma alone is enough to send your salivary glands into overdrive, but toasted and covered in butter the taste is incomparable. The rich gruyère is impeccably balanced by the tang of the chives, managing to perfectly emulate the spicy sweet partnership of its conventional counterpart with a savoury flavour that is all its own.
As one might expect, Harrods offers a veritable feast of chocolate eggs to celebrate the season of Christian rebirth, with prices ranging from the supremely affordable standard Choc on Choc egg (£4.50) to something rather more decadent from Pralifino (£48). For me however, the one that really stands out is the Harrods exclusive White Chocolate Egg with Dried Fruit (250g - £24.95). Handmade and decorated, this beautifully crafted piece of confectionary looks almost as good as it tastes. The chocolate is silky, creamy and deeply calorific, while the aesthetically pleasing dried strawberries and raspberries offer a flavourful contrast that awakens the mouth from its sweet sweet stupor. If your tastes don’t run to white chocolate there is a milk and nut variant available, as well as a deep dark chocolate and orange peel option.

For a gorgeous alternative to the full-sized egg, look no further than Lucky’s gourmet filled Humpty Dumpty’s (60g/£6.00). The milk Valrhona chocolate of the Duke of Nutting Hazel melts smoothly away to reveal an inner shell coated with a delectable hazelnut and praline filling. If you are a fan of Nutella – and who isn’t? – you will devour this little egg in moments. The range is said to be inspired by Lewis Carroll’s Alice... novels and successfully introduces a touch of wonderment to the palate.
If you’re looking for a little sweet treat for adults and littlies alike, Biscuiteers proffer a beautiful range of Easter-themed biscuity lollipops (45g/£4.50). Handmade in the UK by Harriet Hastings and her husband Stevie Congdon – they of Lettuce fame – the Biscuiteers lollipops provide a delightful any-time snack without the peril of sticky fingers. The Easter range includes traditional chicks and bunnies as well as the wholly patriotic Union Jack Egg Lollipop, ideal for this most nationalistic of years when Britain is full of the Olympic and Royal Jubilee spirit. The Biscuiteeers mission statement is a simple one – ‘why send flowers when you can send biscuits instead?’ – the sentiment of which I couldn’t agree with more!

The full range of Harrods Easter products can be purchased from the Food Hall of the iconic Knightsbridge store in London, while selected items are also available online at www.Harrods.com.

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger

This piece can also be found on www.TheDetour.co.uk. Visit the site for fashion, beauty and entertainment features and news pieces as well as spa reviews and competitions

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger

Paul Mitchell is one of those names that seem to have been around forever, but unlike most of those other brands that I used to spend my teenage babysitting money on, Paul Mitchell has managed to maintain its edge of affordable exclusivity. Avoiding the naff trap, the brand has grown from a $700 three product enterprise, to a multi-million dollar award-winning, trail-blazing business with an international fan base and a strong ethical stance.  January 2012 saw the launch of two magnificent new products within the Awapuhi Wild Ginger Collection and I’ve been lucky enough to try them out.

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Hydromist Blow-Out Spray 150ml £17.95 – The original Awapuhi products first hit our shelves more than 30 years ago, but in an intimate melding, where ‘tradition met technology’ the Wild Ginger range was born and it’s like nothing you’ve ever used before. As someone prone to frizz – or pompom head, as my friends kindly refer to it! – the lowly hairdryer has never been my besty, even professional stylists struggle, often leaving me to meekly  slink away with a hat pressed firmly to my head following a cut and colour. Keeping that in mind, I must admit to some scepticism when reading the Awapuhi hype. The Hydromist Blow-Out Spray has a two surprising ingredients tucked up its sleeve however; Honey and Caster Oil. Now, Honey alone is not necessarily a good thing to have in a hair care product – it may be a natural humectant, which means that it holds on to water molecules and stops moisture-loss, but being a sticky substance it’s not overly conducive to soft and silky locks (that’s not to say that it’s lacking in the styling department). However, when you combine it with deeply moisturising and highly absorbable Castor Oil, which actively works to coat the hair shaft, sealing the cuticle and locking in moisture, you’re on to something of a winner. The Hydromist smells gorgeously zingy, with none of the unpleasant chemical undertones one usually associates with styling products, and works like an absolute dream. While the Castor Oil and Honey combo get to grips with the frizz, lightweight conditioners protect the hair from heat damage, creating a light hold with a non-sticky, healthy-looking finish for all styles. Awapuhi Wild Ginger Hydromist Blow-Out Spray also offers UV and colour protection.

Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Hydrocream Whip 200ml £21.95 –  While the key ingredients in the Blow-Out Spray are Honey and Castor Oil, it is the current darling of the skin- and hair-care industries , Argan Oil, that struts its funky stuff in the Wild Ginger Hydrocream Whip. Rich in essential fatty acids, Vitamin E, Phenols, and Carotenes, Argan Oil has been embraced by the beauty business as a parent reaches for a long lost child. It hydrates, it protects and most importantly, it repairs dry and damaged skin and hair, apparently even working wonders on psoriasis. In the Hydrocream Whip Argan Oil takes on the roll of conditioner, helping treated hair to look healthy and full bodied, while the Awapuhi helps to lock in moisture and produce a stunning salon shine. I am something of a reluctant mousse user, having grown up in the 80’s and 90’s, those eras of the crunchy curl, but the Hydrocream Whip has a soft, almost untreated finish, leaving hair looking glossy, sleek and full of volume with nary a frizz in sight. One final word to the wise – a little Whip goes a long way! Don’t be tempted to overdo it – Hydrocream Whip hold easily lasts for a full day and extra product will only drag your hair down, giving that lovely  ‘I’ve not had time to shower today’ look, whereas when used sparingly you’ll have beautiful tresses for as long as you need.

The Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Collection is available from salons nationwide. For more information visit www.paul-mitchell.co.uk.

Botanical White

Botanical White
Attaining that all-American whiter than white smile has become something of a preoccupation for us Brits during the last decade. There was a time when we didn’t really think that much about it – as long as our teeth were our own, we were relatively happy. But as we became more aware of our deficiencies in this department, which are quite obvious when compared with the beaming fluoride-enhanced grins of the Americans and Australians gracing our TV screens, we began to feel self-conscious and turned to dentists and peroxide-touting home kits  to help us. However, in 2011 an EU directive put an end to such shenanigans, banning the sale of peroxide-based whitening kits throughout the UK and Europe, so is it time to return to stained gnashers and turn our backs on pearly whites? Nope! Botanical White fortuitously enters stage right…

Despite the lack of public awareness, Botanical White has actually been on sale for more than 8 years. Peroxide free – so consequently free from the unpleasant side effects associated with teeth whitening – Botanical White uses a unique blend of natural ingredients that have been discovered to be easily absorbed by tooth enamel, the upshot of which is naturally whiter teeth.
So, what are these magical natural ingredients? While Sodium Bicarbonate (or baking soda to you and me) might be expected, having been used as a cleaning agent in many toothpastes for years, some of the other constituents are mildly surprising. Pomegranate Extract, that well-known anti-oxidant, apparently also boasts antibacterial properties, which help with tooth whitening as well as general tooth and gum care, while soothing and healing Aloe Vera is used to keep teeth and gums healthy and calming Chamomile Flower Extract is packed with anti-inflammatory flavonoids for happy gums. The final active is a great whack of Vitamin D, which works to prevent infections that can lead to tooth decay and gingivitis. All of that sounds pretty impressive really, but not massively conducive to losing the stains on teeth regularly attacked by coffee, red wine, nicotine and all the other bad things that many of us put into our mouths on a daily basis. The key, however, seems not to be the use of any particular ingredient, but the use of them all together.
The claim is that Botanical White can lighten tooth discolouration by up to 11 shades and for up to two years, without the sore gums and sensitivity brought on by carbamide peroxide. Well, I’ve not had two years to test the latter claim, but the former does have some credence. On opening the box, the kit appears rather alarming, containing guards and syringes filled with different colour fluids, but the instructions are clear and to the point and after the initial experiment everything feels rather intuitive. Results are not immediate, I’ve been using Botanical White for about three weeks now – I admit, not religiously – and although I wouldn’t stretch it to ’11 shades’ of improvement, I have noticed a real reduction of staining from my 5-a-day coffee habit, which for a natural solution is pretty impressive.

Botanical White is made in the UK and available for £44.99. For more information visit: http://www.botanicalwhite.co.uk.

Clinique Happy in Bloom 2012

My goodness me, it must be spring – the latest incarnation of Clinique’s Happy in Bloom has found its way on to my dressing table. With a bright new look to match its bright new scent, this fizzing floral fragrance blends its distinctive mix of lily of the valley, white freesia and mimosa with subtle fruity undertones and a light green accord suggestive of freshly mown lawns and new tennis shoes.
The 2012 limited edition Happy in Bloom variant perfectly encapsulates Britain in spring time, evoking thoughts of cool fresh air playing over blossom and the sense of joyous expectancy as the quietened country prepares to leap into life once more. The composition is somehow fresh and vibrant without being brash, retaining a delicately soft base of warm amber and white wood, which lingers gently throughout the day. The effect is very feminine; I am woman, hear me purr.

Presented in true Happy style in the tactile curvy bottle decked out in the latest Clinique design –bold and bright this year – this perfume spray is sure to put a spring in your step and a song in your heart, whatever the weather.

Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial

This piece can also be found on www.TheDetour.co.uk. Visit the site for fashion, beauty and entertainment features and news pieces as well as spa reviews and competitions
Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial

Guerlain’s original Shalimar was created in 1925 as a sort of ode de parfum encapsulating the great love story of Emperor Shahjahan – he of Taj Mahal fame – and his young wife Mumtaz Mahal. The scent was sweet and sultry, mingling Vanilla with Bergamot and citrus notes and wrapping them around a warm floral heart; a scented emblem of undying love. Shalimar Parfum Initial, credited to Thierry Wasser, takes the solid foundation laid out by its predecessor and adds an altogether modern twist which belies its baby pink exterior.
This is no simple gourmand perfume, however. Rich and silky, Shalimar Parfum Initial boosts its classic Vanilla, Tonka Bean and White Musk base with a luscious woodsy undertone of Vetiver and Patchouli, the Jasmine and Iris heart notes mingle seductively with fruity tones, while the Bergamot is joined by zesty Orange and a green accord evocative of freshly cut grass. The composition shies away from the overtly floral grandeur of Shalimar and focuses more on the oriental origins; it is warm and well-heeled, feeling almost calorific in its intensity, managing to subdue the senses in a way that is not at all unpleasant.
Beautifully presented in a Jade Jagger designed flacon, Guerlain’s Shalimar Parfum Initial, in no way embarrasses its forebears.
The only bone I have to pick with this scent is the marketing campaign – I can never quite see what nubile nudity has to do with selling perfume and as stunning as nymph-like Natalia Vodianova might be, pictures of her skinny little bottom don’t make me think ‘Ooh, I mush just pop out and buy some Shalimar...’ BUT, as bones go, that’s a very small one, so I shan’t hold it against Guerlain.

Top notes: Bergamot, Orange, Green notes
Heart notes: Fruit, Rose, Jasmine, Iris
Bottom notes: Patchouli, Vetiver, Vanilla, Tonka Bean, White Musk

Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial is available in three sizes, starting at £37.00/40ml. For more information and a list of stockists visit: http://www.guerlain.com/int/en.

Terre Exotique Trappeur Cooking Kit from Harrods

Terre Exotique Trappeur Cooking Kit from Harrods

As the seasons change so does my diet, and as we’re moving into spring I am wanting to leave behind those stodgy winter suppers and experiment with some lighter, fresher flavours... Which is where Harrods latest must-have cookery set comes into play. The Terre Exotique Trappeur Cooking Kit contains everything the home gourmand needs to revitalise their pantry and put some zing into spring cookery.
Complete with a recipe book full of mouth-watering ideas, the Terre Exotique Trappeur Cooking Kit boasts an exciting range of spices, glazes and condiments that will add a touch of wow to even the most humdrum of ingredients. From the warm, smoky-flavoured Viking Salt, with its onion, curry and black pepper mix, which is just as ideal for jazzing up an omelette as it is for seasoning flavoured bread, to the Herbes Sauvages de Crete (Wild Herb Mix to you and me), which combines those spice rack staples basil, thyme, rosemary, oregano and marjoram to delicious effect, adding a distinctive Mediterranean feel to veggie sauces, meaty marinades and everything in between. The Huile D’olives Influence Scandinave is a light and tempting blend of olive, fennel and dill oils with lemon extract, which adds a delicate citrus tang to white meats, fish and rice dishes, as well as working wonderfully as a simple dip, while the Melange Canadien is an interesting mix of sugar, garlic, onion, pink pepper corn and maple sugar, perfect for adding a touch of interest to any fish dish. I wasn’t really sure that I would find a use for the final ingredient, Pink Peppercorns, but when crushed they add an excellent and distinctive flavour to vegetable soup, and although I’ve yet to try this, I am told that they are capable of transforming vanilla ice-cream into a dish fit for the gods.
Beautifully presented in a leather and cloth roll, which would look perfectly at home in the backpack of an upmarket hunter, the Terre Exotique Trappeur Cooking Kit makes for an ideal gift for any foodie, not to mention an inspirational kitchen treat for yourself.

The Terre Exotique Trappeur Cooking Kit is £25 and available from Harrods Knightsbridge, London,  as well as online at www.harrods.com.

Now We’re Cooking – The Garlic Farm Cook Book

This review can also be found on www.TheCulinaryGuide.co.uk. Visit the site for in depth food, drink and travel features and news pieces as well as restaurant and hotel reviews and competitions.

Now We’re Cooking – The Garlic Farm Cook Book

It could just be my imagination, but I experienced a distinct garlicky whiff when opening the pages of this book, which isn’t so much a recipe book as a garlic encyclopaedia, which covers everything from planting, to plaiting to finally cooking the stuff. Being something of a gardener, I’ve grown my own garlic for the last four or five years, but have nowhere near the knowledge – or infectious enthusiasm – exhibited by the Boswell family, who have owned and run The Garlic Farm on the Isle of Wight since the 1950’s.

With a relaxed and friendly style, The Garlic Farm Cook Book guides the reader through the history of the award-winning Garlic Farm, discusses the varieties available and offers hints and tips on how to produce your own bumper crop, before heading to what I like to think of as the serious business  - eating!
The recipe section is helpfully divided into seasons and contains concoctions to suit every pallet and every culinary level, from Roasted Purple Sprouting Broccoli, to the more ambitious Lamb Kofte Tortilla Wraps. For me, it’s the more simple recipes that really have the wow-factor; the Garlic Bites were devoured before they had time to properly cool and The Best Cheesy Garlic Bread makes you groan out loud in pleasure with the first delectable mouthful, but even the slightly more involved dishes, such as Aubergine, Courgette and Halloumi Stack, are simple to follow and incredibly tasty.
While not a revelation to foodies, The Garlic Farm Cook Book exhibits the versatility of this unassuming little bulb with great success. With sections on folklore, health benefits, and even – ahem – aphrodisiacs (curious, given that if anything was going to bring on a ‘headache’ you’d think it would be garlic breath), this is a great little book that will tell you more than you ever needed (or perhaps wanted) to know about garlic.
The Garlic Farm is a family-run business, based on the Isle of Wight, with a cafe and shop open to visitors daily. The Garlic Farm Cookbook, edited by Natasha Edwards, is £9.50 and available from www.thegarlicfarm.co.uk; 01983 865378.

Lush Ro's Argan Body Conditioner

This piece can also be found on www.TheDetour.co.uk. Visit the site for fashion, beauty and entertainment features and news pieces as well as spa reviews and competitions

Lush Ro's Argan Body Conditioner

Argan Oil seems to be the big ingredient of the moment, appearing in everything from hair treatments to hand cream, but a Body Conditioner? That’s a new one on me!
Working in much the same way as a hair conditioner – you slather it on wet skin, then shower it off – Ro's Argan Body Conditioner is designed to smooth, soften, moisturise and generally leave your skin feeling amazing.
Along with the mighty Argan Oil, which is now renown as holding almost mythical properties, positively packed with Vitamin E, essential fatty acids, Carotenes and Phenols, as it is, making it ideal for repairing dry and damaged skin and hair and even helping sufferers of psoriasis, the Body Conditioner contains a host of hydrating ingredients.  Cypress oil, Cupuacu Butter, which is a natural humectant (it holds on to water molecules and stops moisture loss), antioxidant Brazil Nut Oil, soothing and healing Cocoa Butter, Shea Butter and softening Almond Oil are all brought together in this fantastic product and make for a moisturising force to be reckoned with.
The scent of Ro's Argan Body Conditioner is unusual – definitely rosy, but with a sugary sweetness that hits the back of the throat like a good dessert wine, which is by no means unpleasant – and leaves the skin smelling clean and fresh without the overtly floral tang that one usually associates with rose scents.
At £15.50 (225g), the price is not prohibitive and the conditioner goes a reasonably long way, making this one of my favourite Lush products and a must-have for any dry-skin sufferer.

Ro's Argan Body Conditioner is available from all Lush stores nationwide, as well as online at www.lush.co.uk.

Derma-Re-Work DreamWeave Mascara

Derma-Re-Work DreamWeave Mascara

Ever found yourself wishing that your mascara could last three days without smudging, or need for refreshing? No, me neither! Someone at Cosmeceutical’s specialists, Derma-Re-Work, obviously has though, because this spring has seen the launch of DreamWeave.
Designed to give the wearer beautifully long lashes for an inordinately protracted period, DreamWeave has been hailed as ‘eyelash extensions in a tube’. With a ‘magnet-like’ silicone formula, which clings to each lash to prevent flaking or smudging, DreamWeave creates a striking look in moments that will last up to three days. Despite this lengthy wearability however, the mascara is relatively easy to clean away without creating days of panda-eyes.
Application is as simple as one would expect – the wand is finely toothed, to help avoid clumping, which creates a more natural-looking finish and sweeping lashes to flutter as you see fit.
DreamWeave (Black, 6ml) is £12.00 and available from http://www.wrinkleregime.com.

Lulu’s War Against Ageing

This piece can also be found on www.TheDetour.co.uk. Visit the site for fashion, beauty and entertainment features and news pieces as well as spa reviews and competitions

Lulu’s War Against Ageing

A few short years ago when the original pop pixie, Lulu, experienced the universal horror of discovering her first wrinkle at around the age of 40, rather than turning to the normal recourse of wailing and gnashing her teeth she decided to invest her time in trying to halt the ageing process. Recruiting the assistance of the John Frieda Hair Company’s award-winning chemist Dr. Joe Cincotta, she embarked on a project to create a series of products that ‘would do for her skin the things it was no longer doing for itself’. Since that time, Lulu has added a growing number of products to her arsenal to assist in her battles in the long-running ‘war on ageing’ and she has chosen to share her weaponry with us.

Time Bomb Hand to Hand Combat cream 75ml RRP £13.50 – Our hands have a hard time of it really; they’re more used, abused and exposed than any other part of our bodies and as a consequence more often and easily damaged, so it’s no wonder that the hands are often the first part of the body to show signs of ageing. From loose dry skin to liver spots, the signs of ageing on unhappy hands are many and varied and are precisely what Lulu set out to tackle with Hand to Hand Combat. Packed with an abundance of plumping, smoothing, soothing and nourishing ingredients, this hand cream is designed to halt the signs ageing, help reverse the damage already done and protect your hands from the daily assault they that life sees fit to throw at them. Hyaluronic acid (frequently referred to as ‘the ‘key to the fountain of youth’) smoothes out wrinkles by plumping the skin and anti-oxidant-rich olive & argan oils deeply hydrate, while white tea leaf extract – an ingredient much prized by Chinese emperors for centuries for its health-giving and rejuvenating properties – protects against free radicals and the ageing effect they have upon the skin. Lightly scented and quickly absorbed, this cream is perfect for everyday use and hands both young and old.
Time Bomb Youth Explosion Day Serum 30ml RRP £33 – The aim of Lulu’s Time Bomb products is to protect the skin from the greatest signs of ageing; ‘dullness, dryness and loss of elasticity.’ The base of the Day Serum is Beta Cella Complex - a unique formula designed to ‘re-inflate’ skin by promoting a ‘framework’ and helping to sustain its natural lipid barrier, while glycerine and bio-polymers, derived from oats, lock in moisture and ‘help to shore up skin’s basic support system’. The serum is very light weight, leaving no greasy residue and goes a surprisingly long way, even on dry winter skin. As the Gillette advert says, winter hates my face, so normally at this time of year my skin is feeling tight and my moisturiser leaves me a little oily, but with Lulu’s help my face is feeling remarkably soft and supple and looking really rather fine, even if I do say so myself! The serum is easily absorbed so works wonderfully well under your makeup and has no artificial perfume, so it will not clash with your usual scent.

Time Bomb Derm Warfare Night Serum 30ml RRP £33 – Just as the Day serum has a Beta Cella Complex base, the Night Serum is built around Rejuvastin™ Complex, which ‘targets and destroys the dull, ageing, upper layer of skin and accelerates the production of new collagen and elastin.’ Both green and white tea extracts are among the ingredients of the serum, adding their anti-oxidant properties and protecting the skin against the signs of ageing brought on by exposure to the sun, while calendula soothes the skin and glycolic acid helps in the removal of dead cells and the protection of the new and a combination of watermelon, apple and lentil extracts encourage the growth of new skin cells. Application is a simple affair; merely apply a thin layer to clean dry skin every evening, leave to dry and continue with your usual evening moisturiser. I hate to brag, but on the whole I have pretty good skin tone, so I was surprised to find that after a few days use my pores were beginning to appear smaller and my skin generally began to assume a bit of a glow and felt wonderful. Having used both serums at the same time, it is difficult for me to verify the individual claims made, but together I can happily concur with the PR statements and give a thumbs up to the Time Bomb range. I would also be really interested to see the results when used on older skin than mine.

Lulu’s Time Bomb range is available at QVC, Amazon, selected department stores including Fenwick, www.lulusplace.co.uk and victoriahealth.com

Jane Eyre (DVD Review)

Jane Eyre (DVD Review)

Released to DVD and Blu-ray on March 12th, just in time for Mother’s Day, Cary Fukunaga’s re-interpretation of Jane Eyre is one of those films that I’ve been looking forward to with a small degree of torment – would it live up to the much-cherished novel? I avoided the cinema release to prevent myself turning into one of those annoying ‘THAT didn’t happen in the book’ types, so when I was sent a preview copy of the disc I sat before it with something approaching trepidation.
I must admit that when it comes to the classic greats I am something of a purist – tamper with Jane Austen at your peril! – so with Charlotte Bronte’s crowning glory Fukunaga had a lot to live up to. Moving away from a linear telling, the film opens with a heartbroken Jane (Mia Wasikowska) fleeing Thornfield Hall across a suitably bleak and dramatic countryside, before returning to the back story of cruelty and crueller disappointment.

Jane Eyre is beautifully shot, peppered with gothic architecture, fabulously austere landscaping and warmly realistic lighting, all brought to life by a deeply evocative score, which makes it a pleasure to view. Missed pivotal scenes will not go down well with true Bronte-ites, but if you are not overly familiar with the book, this makes for a compelling retelling of one of English languages greatest novels.
While Michael Fassbender makes for an appealing Mr Rochester he doesn’t quite deliver the characters famed brusqueness and, for me, Mia Wasikowska’s Jane lacks a little of the archness that Rochester was meant to find so alluring – after all, Jane is meant to be plain, but nowhere in the text do I remember it detailed that she never smiled. But, for those not obsessed with the novel, I must admit that they play their parts admirably and dear Dame Judi Dench makes a wonderful Mrs Fairfax, even if she does forget to disapprove of the burgeoning Master/Servant relationship.
As for me, well, I think that an extra 15 minutes of rapport building could have really made this film – I found the progression from ignored governess to adored lover too abrupt and rather startling – and I missed the immortal Reader, I married him ending, but with only one minor ‘That didn’t happen...’ scene to complain of, I can’t be too critical and am certain that I’ll be watching this film again.
Jane Eyre will make for the ideal Mother’s Day gift when it is released on Blu-ray & DVD on 12 March 2012.

Essential Care Ocean Eye Shadow Palette

Essential Care Ocean Eye Shadow Palette
If you’re interested in natural health and beauty, then you’re probably already familiar with Essential Care. A small family-run business in Suffolk, Essential Care have been producing natural, organic, handmade cosmetics,  skin-, hair- and body-care products suitable for even the most sensitive and eczema-prone skin since 2003. With a philosophy stating that ‘All ingredients must have therapeutic value, as well as making the product a joy to use,’ all goods are necessarily created from the highest quality constituents, from cold-pressed virgin oils to anti-oxidant- and vitamin-rich herbs and minerals, while being completely free from all Parabens, Petrochemicals, and other nasties.
Despite being aware of the company for quite some time, I have only recently tried one of their cosmetics, in the form of the Essential Care Ocean Eye Shadow Palette, and I must say that I was very impressed. Presentation is simple, being restricted to recycled and recyclable materials, but if you can content yourself with a product that is prettier on the inside than it is on the out, then I think that you’ll be pleased that you made the compromise.
Created from pure mineral pigments, organic plant oils and antioxidant (anti-ageing) extracts, including calendula, chamomile and sea buckthorn, the eye shadow is light and pleasant to wear, and being free from synthetic colours and fragrances, highly unlikely to cause any irritation. Indeed, even my sensitive skin, which usually begins to feel tight and heavy after wearing any makeup for even the shortest period of time, felt perfectly comfortable. The lack of commonly used ingredients, such as Camine and Silk Powder, also make this colour palette suitable for vegans – even the applicators are of vegetable origin. The colours are subtle and blendable, with the Sand shade being ideal for use as either a highlighter, or as base upon which to build a more elaborate look, while Shell, Seaweed and Lagoon are designed to perfectly compliment, offering a softly shimmering effect truly evocative of a gentle spring day by the British seashore.

The Essential Care Ocean Eye Shadow Palette is £34.50 and is available from http://www.essential-care.co.uk. Order Online or Call 01638 716593. Free Delivery when you spend £30, free Gift when you spend £50.

Mother's Day

Thank You Mum

I don’t know about you, but there’s not much that I don’t owe my Mum. She did all the obvious things – such as birth me and raise me, which is really enough for anyone – but even though I’ve long since reached adulthood the parenting hasn’t stopped; she’s sat beside me in hospital beds, fed my cat and emptied his litter tray when I’ve been ill or on holiday, she offers constant moral support and is always a reliable shoulder to cry on. So, with all those points in mind, Mother’s Day is always something I do my best to observe with style. Of course, saying ‘thank you, Mum’ needn’t be about finding the most expensive gift on the high street, it’s the giving of gifts that show that some effort and thought has gone into the procurement that is really the point. So whether your budget stretches to £20 or £200, make sure that this Mother’s Day is one that she’ll not forget.

Lindt Lindor Collection £9.99 (285g) – Chocolate can seem like a little bit of a cop-out when it comes to gifts for mums, but if you’re on a budget and you get your selection right, it can be perfect. This year Lindt have released a new Lindor Collection, which allows the original Milk Chocolate, White Chocolate and Extra Dark Chocolate truffles to mingle with the decadent Stracciatella, sumptuous Hazelnut and scrumptious Irish Cream truffles and sweet little Chocolate Hearts. All coated with the smoothest of chocolate, each centre is a little delight that is sure to make mum’s day. Lindt has been producing the very finest chocolates since 1845 and this wealth of experience has allowed them to develop a business over which they have complete control, from planting to packaging. In recent years the company has also made a firm commitment to reduce CO2 emissions, waste, energy and water consumption, producing a chocolate that makes you feel good all round.

The Lindt Lindor Collection, along with the full Lindt range is available from http://www.lindt-shop.co.uk/our-ranges/lindor/lindor-gift-box-285g.html.

Fortnum & Mason Bath Soap £8.00 – Created exclusively for F&M by those masters of all things soapy – husband and wife team Heyland and Whittle – this can only be described as a little piece of art in a box. Strikingly presented in a mini hatbox, stunningly scented with the finest herbs, spices and essential oils and decorated with beautiful dried roses, I defy any woman not to love this soap. Free from parabens and sulphates, the soap is handmade in England in true traditional style, using natural ingredients, including deeply hydrating Olive, Coconut, Palm and Castor oils, as well as Goats Milk, which is known to be excellent for sensitive skin having a near identical PH level to human epidermis. All the technical stuff aside, this is simply a really pretty little gift which smells almost good enough to eat.
You can purchase the from Fortnum & Mason Bath Soap from the Fortnum and Mason London Piccadilly store, or online at http://www.fortnumandmason.com.

Blinc Heated Lash Curler £18.50 – There’s probably not a woman in the western world who hasn’t, at some point in her early, life managed to chop off a set of eyelashes with one of the old vaguely obstetric-looking curling devices. And I must admit, that since my big sister did just that to a ten year old me I’ve been too scared to even try using them myself, so when I read the Blinc press release it was a with a feeling of intrigued joy. Extremely simple to use and apparently risk-free, the Blinc Heated Lash Curler works without clamping and is in fact not unlike applying mascara, merely turn the device on and gently brush your lashes. The result isn’t a pronounced curl, but lashes lift and fan creating a lovely effect, perfect for enhancing with your mascara of choice. This is perhaps more of a gift for the younger mum, or at least the mum who’s young at heart, but it’s certainly worth keeping in mind for anyone who takes pride in their appearance.
The Blinc Heated Lash Curler is available to purchase from http://www.blincuk.co.uk.

Formed in 2003, Essential Care is a small family-run business based in the UK, hand producing a wealth of natural organic cosmetics and toiletries. Repechage Sea Spa Mineral Bath Salts £27.50 (500g) – There is nothing in this world more relaxing than a good long soak in a nice hot bath, but what you put in it can make or break the experience. Repechage’s beautifully scented Mandarin Triple Mint Sea Spa Mineral Bath Salts (which remind me of a curious mix of Opal Fruits – ah, those were the days! – and Wriggley’s Spearmint gum) could just be the things to fashion a personal pool of tranquillity for your mum. Created by imbuing vitamin, mineral and anti-oxidant rich sea salt with a glorious combination of essential oils, including calming lavender, stimulating Peppermint & Spearmint, soothing Cucumber with its anti-inflammatory properties and Grapefruit, which widely is known to trigger fat metabolism, the Repechage Bath Salts create a spa-like experience in the comfort of your own home, relaxing the mind, soothing tired muscles and leaving skin feeling wonderfully soft.

GADI 21 Mineral Nail Kit £30 – A decent set of nails can be difficult of even the most idle amongst us to maintain, but for a busy mum it can be nigh on impossible and as for a regular manicure, well, the chance would be a fine thing. Planet Skincare Wrinkle Defence £65 (50ml) – If you have a mother with metaphorically thick skin, who’s not likely to take offence at the implied inference, Planet Skincare’s Wrinkle Defence could make a superb gift this Mothering Sunday. Containing Planet Skincare’s much lauded Syn-ake® formula, which is designed to ‘inhibit the pathways of neurotransmitters which cause facial muscle tension (fine lines & wrinkles)’ and rejuvenates collagen in the skin, Wrinkle Defence is staggeringly effective, working almost instantly to reduce the signs of ageing, with cumulative effect so that within 28 days users experience 52% wrinkle reduction and an 82% smoothing effect. Now, I don’t claim to fully understand the technology that can put an improvement in skin tone into percentages, but having used it myself, I am beginning to suspect that witchcraft is involved! I am lucky enough to only show signs of laughter lines so far, but even after a few days of use they appeared noticeably less... well... noticeable! And if you don’t want to take my word for it, take the word of Gwyneth Paltrow, the Minogue sisters and Cheryl Cole, all of whom are said to be big fans of the stuff. Most impressive of all for me though, is that these results are achieved using largely natural ingredients, so Wrinkle Defence is completely paraben-free and has not been tested on animals.
Planet Skincare Wrinkle Defence is available from Selfridges and online at www.planetskincare.co.uk.

Planet Skincare Platinum Creme Excellence £125 (50ml) – Finally, if you have the cash to splash, why not get mum something really special, in the form of Planet Skincare’s very latest release, Platinum Creme Excellence. This daily moisturiser takes all the goodness of Wrinkle Defence, then soups it up a couple of notches further with the introduction or Platinum Colloid®. Working in much the same way as Silver Soap, nano sized particles of platinum enter the skin, directly repairing and rejuvenating tired and damaged cells without stripping or impairing natural essential oils. Alongside Syn-ake®, the platinum actively stimulates the production of fresh Collagen I and III, increases natural skin hydration levels by 33%, improves skin elasticity up to 47%, dramatically reduces fine lines and wrinkles by up to 61% and prevents further DNA damage by improving the skin cells natural electrical balance . On top of all that, the skin is left feeling super smooth and silky and looks absolutely incredible and will give your mum a flush of youthful radiance. As with other Planet Skincare products, Platinum Creme Excellence is paraben- and artificial fragrance- free and has not been tested on animals, so it gets a nice big ethical thumbs up too!
Planet Skincare Platinum Creme Excellence is available from Selfridges and online at www.planetskincare.co.uk.
